In my opinion, art serves many purposes in the classroom. It is a very valuable research and can be a amazing learning tool for children. In the classroom, art allow children to use creativity and express themselves in their own unique way. Art is very comforting for children because no art is considered wrong or bad art. Art also functions as a method of teaching where children can visually copy or create something on their own. Many children are visual learners so art is a great way to address the learning needs of these visual learners. Acedemically, it teaches child dimentions, spacial sense, shapes, color, size, proportion, and wide variety of things. Art in the classroom is essential in the first couple years of child's schooling because many children do not know how to read and write at these ages and must learn through visual work or art.
In my particular elementary school, art was very important. Each grade level incorporated art some how in the classroom curriculum. In addition, we had a block of time in each week designated to a separate art class with an assigned art teacher. In this class, every week we had a new lesson in art. Whether it be working with clay, papermache, oil paints, pastels, shading, etc. This class was designated to teach techniques, learn new approaches, and enhance our art skills. As a child, I enjoyed doing art but I never felt like I was as good of an artist as the other kids in my class. I remember that I would always try to copy their art but it never seemed to come out the same. I would erase my sketches and sketch over and over until I got it the way I wanted it. Usually I never felt comfortable with my first attempt. From a young age I have been perfectionist so this explains most of my behavior. Art is a very useful tool for teachers to use because it can assist children who learn through two different kinds of multiple intelligences Spatial intelligence and Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence. Art can address the kids that learn through spatial intelligence and bodily-kinesthetic. One way is through theater. Another ways are through projects that involve clay or molding objects or simply just through drawing or painting. Art is a really good alternative for kids that have these kinds of learning styles.
